Hitchcock Introduces Daniels Brenner's mother, Lydia and Suzanne Pleshette as his previous lover Annie before any action occurs. The suspense is increased because of Hitchcock making time to establish relationships between these two characters. Jessica Tandy plays Brenner's former lover Annie as well as Suzanne Pleshette portrays his mother Lydia. Evan Hunter - better known as Ed McBain - adapted this screenplay that was a novella written by Daphne Du Maurier, into the popular film. Hitchcock developed an electronic score as opposed to a traditional music score. Hitchcock studied a bizarre attack that occurred on Capitola in California in the year 1961 caused by sooty shearwaters, which was believed to be the result of diatom poisoning from anchovies that the birds had eaten, leading to an extreme level of anger.
